Franconia – Home Sweet Home
The landscape of Franconia is influenced by hundrets of years of human culture but some hidden places remained wild or at least still look like. Extensive beech forests cover the hills of the Franconian Switzerland with its jurassic limestone cliffs. Countless springs feed small creeks in hidden valleys of forests covered by ramson in early spring. The geological history of this area is one of the most interesting ones in the world and it resulted in a impressive diversity of environments. You can find species e.g. amonst orchids and insects you will hardly find in any other region of Germany. In contrast, the forests of the Fichtel Mountains are dark, like from mystic legends, and are formed by harsh and long winter months. Moreover, they grow on a completely different bedrock than the forests only a few kilometers further to the west, giving living environments to a completely different flora and fauna.
